Step Inside Someone’s Shoes: A Fiction Writing Activity

Create a work of fiction (2-6 pages) that, like To Kill a Mockingbird, addresses the idea of courage (or lack of courage).

Also like To Kill a Mockingbird, this story should be told in first person point of view, where the narrator is a main character.

As in any work of fiction, there should be:

--a clear setting (time period and place) that is described with vivid detail.

--characters (animals and/or humans) who are described with vivid detail.

--a clear plot that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. This plot should have a clear conflict.

Person vs. Person

Person vs. Himself/Herself

Person vs. Nature/Society/Aliens :)

Person vs. Fate

-- a central message/theme

Steps:

1. Brainstorm ideas about a main character

2. Create a storyboard to help you get a sense of the beginning, the middle, and the end.

3. Draft—Consider whether you want to write the story in traditional storytelling form, as a graphic “novel,” or in some other way.

4. Revise according to teacher directions

5. Edit

6. Publish
